DKX232 Raritan KVM/IP Switch

Model #: DKX232
DKX232 Raritan KVM/IP Switch by Raritan Computer
Provides two remote users and one local user BIOS level access and control of up to 32 servers or devices. The KX232 combines an economical price per port, at the rack access and the two remote user access desired by many customers.

Raritan pioneered the 32 port KVM-over-IP switch, which reduces the number of KVM switches required, lowers costs, installation time, and maintenance effort.

The KX232 supports a single, dense rack that reduces cabling and simplifies installation. It can also support two or more racks by leveraging its 150 foot distance between the switch and target server.
Dominion® KX consists of two main components: the digital KVM switch and Computer Interface Modules (CIMs).

*The switch connects to each CIM to provide KVM-over-IP capability for remote access along with simultaneous local access for controlling servers at the rack.
*Each CIM connects to the KVM ports of an individual server and converts the video signal for transmission up to 150 feet over UTP (Cat5/5e/6) cabling. The CIMs also deliver Raritans patented "keep-alive" keyboard/mouse emulation.
*Raritan's client software is automatically downloaded via browser; Stand-alone versions of client software can be pre-installed for modem access.

Hardware Features
Multiple Hardware Models Dominion KX's multiple hardware models enable simultaneous access by 1, 2 or 4 remote users to 16 or 32 servers.
Advanced Video Resolution Detection Hardware Dominion KX hardware employs Raritan's next generation KVM-over-IP technology with advanced video resolution detection hardware. When a user switches between servers, this system automatically transitions to the new video source quickly and accurately.
Connectivity Features
1, 2 or 4 Concurrent Remote IP Users Dominion KX provides KVM over IP access to 1, 2, or 4 simultaneous, remote users depending on the model purchased. This is achieved while allowing full, unblocked local port access.
16 or 32 Server Ports Users can connect up to 16 or 32 servers to each Dominion KX via Cat5 cabling. Raritan is the first KVM-over-IP vendor with two and four channel 32 port models.
Remote Network Access / KVM Over IP Dominion KX extends Raritan's award-winning IP-Reach video compression circuitry, the industry's highest-performing KVM-over-IP technology. Users can access Dominion KX from anywhere on the network (LAN, WAN, Internet, dial-up), allowing administrators to troubleshoot, reconfigure, reboot and even power cycle servers remotely.
Client Access and Control
Universal KVM Client Access - Anytime, Anywhere, Anyhow The Dominion KX provides a universal level of KVM access through the industry¡¯s broadest and most flexible OS, platform, and browser access. Access targets from multiple computer platforms, through the leading browsers or standalone, with no client license fees or cumbersome software licensing.
Multi-Platform Access and Control for Windows®, Linux®, Sun/Solaris®and Macintosh® In addition to Raritan's Remote Client (RRC) for the Windows platform, Raritan's Java based Multi-Platform Client (MPC) can be used by Linux, Sun/Solaris and Macintosh users.
Leading Browser Support Including Firefox and Mozilla Raritan¡¯s client software supports the major Web browsers including Internet Explorer, Firefox, Mozilla and Netscape
Raritan Virtual Desktop
Full Screen Video Display With the Dominion KX's Full Screen Video Display, users appear to be directly connected to the target server. The user views the full video display from the target server without window borders or toolbars.
Flexible Video Scaling In many instances the user would like to "scale," i.e. stretch or compress the target server's video display to fit the display window on the client. With the KX's flexible scaling, the customer is not restricted to fixed sized windows, but can drag the window border to the desired size, including small thumbnail views.
Fast Video Switching Once the Dominion KX's advanced video resolution detection has calculated a target servers video characteristics, connections to the server occur almost instantaneously. This gives the KX user immediate access in most cases to all connected servers.
Transparent Keyboard Handling Transparent Keyboard Handling means that virtually all user keystrokes are sent to the target server and not processed by the desktop client. This key feature of the Raritan Virtual Desktop obviates the need for most keyboard macros and allows the user to directly interact with the target server with a higher level of connectivity.
Software Features
"Plug and Play" Appliance — Quick and Easy Setup Dominion KX is a completely self-contained system (i.e. an appliance). All KX features, including authentication and Web access, are built into the unit and do not require the use of additional server
Security Features
128-bit SSL Encryption Dominion KX incorporates an extremely high level of data security to ensure that customer server environments are protected from malicious hackers.
Video Encryption Dominion KX securely encrypts the video stream in addition to keyboard and mouse data.
RADIUS, LDAP and Active Directory® Integration Dominion KX integrates with industry-standard directory servers, such as Microsoft's Active Directory, using either the LDAP or RADIUS protocols. This allows Dominion KX to utilize pre-existing username/password databases for security.
Management Features
Remote Management and Administration Administrators can perform all management, administration and configuration operations using a simple graphical user interface, from the convenience of their desktop.
Raritan CommandCenter® Integration Like the rest of the Dominion Series, Dominion KX features complete CommandCenter integration, allowing enterprise users to consolidate all Dominion devices into a single logical system, with a single IP address, and a single management interface.
Firmware Upgrade over Ethernet Dominion KX firmware upgrades can be downloaded directly from the Raritan Web site and upgrades can be performed via the network.

How does Dominion KX differ from remote control software?
When using Dominion KX remotely, the interface may seem similar to remote control software such as PC Anywhere, Windows Terminal Services / Remote Desktop, VNC, etc. However, because Dominion KX is a hardware solution, it is much more powerful:

  • Dominion KX is OS and hardware independent so it can be used to manage any type of server running any OS, whether Intel, Sun, PowerPC running Windows, Linux, Solaris, Novell, etc.
  • State-independent / Agent-less – Dominion KX does not require the managed server OS to be up and running, nor does it require any special software to be installed on the managed server.
  • Out-of-Band – Even if the managed server’s own network connection is unavailable, it can still be managed through Dominion KX.
  • BIOS-level access – Even if the server is hung at boot up, requires booting to safe mode, or requires system BIOS parameters to be altered, Dominion KX still works flawlessly to enable these configurations to be made.

How many users can remotely access servers on each Dominion KX?
Currently, Dominion KX models offer concurrent transmissions of up to four unique servers at any time. Dominion KX can, thereby, provide any of the following permutations:

  • 1 User, viewing four unique servers simultaneously
  • 2 Users, each viewing 2 unique servers simultaneously
  • 8 Users – four viewing two servers; four viewing two different servers simultaneously
  • Any other permutations of up to 8 users, viewing up to four unique servers total.

Can two people look at the same server at the same time?
Yes, up to eight people can look at the same server at the same time.
In order to access Dominion KX from a client, what hardware, software, or network configuration is required?
Dominion KX is completely Web-accessible, so it does not require proprietary software to be installed on clients used for access. (Although an optional installed client is provided in the box for the purposes of accessing Dominion KX via modem).

Dominion KX can be accessed through any major Web browser including: Internet Explorer, Netscape, and Mozilla. Currently, Dominion KX requires that the Web browser run on a Win32 platform with permissions to launch and execute an ActiveX control.

Dominion KX administrators can also perform remote management (set passwords and security, rename servers, change IP address, etc.). To perform remote management from a given workstation, you must also have Java Runtime Environment of v1.4.x or later installed.
